Keratin Treatment Elmwood Park / How Long Does Keratin Last?
How Long Does a Keratin Treatment Last?
"2 to 5 months" is the answer you'll see everywhere, and it's accurate — but it's also a wide enough range that it's worth understanding exactly what pushes a treatment toward the short end versus the long end.
Baseline by Treatment Type
- Express keratin: typically 4–8 weeks — a lighter, faster service, often used as a maintenance touch-up between full treatments.
- Brazilian blowout: typically 8–12 weeks, with the advantage of no downtime before washing.
- Traditional / full keratin: typically 3–5 months — the longest-lasting mainstream option.
- Nanoplasty / formaldehyde-free specialty: typically 2–4 months, varying by formula.

What Actually Moves You Within That Range
Hair Porosity and Texture
More porous hair — often color-treated, previously chemically processed, or naturally coarse hair — can both absorb a treatment especially well and lose it a bit faster, since the same open cuticle structure that lets keratin in also lets it wash out more easily. Fine, less porous hair sometimes holds a treatment for a shorter window simply because there's less surface area and structure for the keratin to bond to.
Wash Frequency and Products
This is the single biggest controllable factor. Sulfate shampoos strip keratin out significantly faster than sulfate-free formulas, and washing daily fades a treatment faster than washing every other day. Two clients with the same treatment can see results last twice as long or half as long purely based on this. Full details in our aftercare guide →.
Heat Styling and Environmental Exposure
Daily high-heat styling without protection, chlorine from pools, and salt water from swimming all accelerate fade. Humid climates also mean the treatment is doing more "work" resisting frizz day to day, which can shorten its effective lifespan slightly compared to a drier climate — see our guide to keratin and humidity → for more on this specifically.
A Rough Month-by-Month Timeline (Traditional Keratin)
- Weeks 1–4: Peak results — smoothest, shiniest, least frizz.
- Weeks 5–10: Gradual softening; roots may start showing more natural texture as new growth comes in untreated.
- Weeks 11–16: Noticeably more natural texture and frizz returning, especially in humidity; many clients book a touch-up around here.
- Beyond 16 weeks: Treatment has mostly washed out for most clients; hair returns close to its natural state.
Express keratin and Brazilian blowout timelines compress this same pattern into a shorter window; nanoplasty and other formaldehyde-free formulas land somewhere in between, depending on the specific product.
When to Book a Touch-Up
Most stylists recommend booking a touch-up when you notice results softening rather than waiting until the treatment has fully faded — starting from a partially-treated base generally requires less product and time than starting completely from scratch.
