What to Expect at a Nanoplasty Appointment, Step by Step

Published · 3 min read

A nanoplasty appointment is longer than a cut or color, usually 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair’s length and density. Knowing what happens in the chair makes it easier to plan your day and to spot a stylist who’s cutting corners.

Before the appointment

A week or two ahead

  • Color first, if you’re coloring. Many stylists prefer color about two weeks before nanoplasty, or after it. Ask yours, because it depends on the product.
  • Get a trim if you need one, or plan to have it done the same day after the treatment.
  • Mention anything relevant: recent bleach, henna, relaxers, pregnancy, scalp sensitivity, or reactions to past treatments.

The day before or the day of

  • Arrive with hair free of heavy oils, masks, or styling products. Some salons ask you to come with unwashed hair because they’ll clarify it anyway.
  • Bring something to do. You’ll be sitting a while.
  • Eat beforehand. Four hours is a long time.

In the chair

1. Consultation (10–15 minutes)

A good stylist looks at your texture, porosity, color history, and any damage, then tells you what’s realistic. This is the time to ask which product they use and to see the ingredient list. Our questions to ask before booking has a checklist.

Some stylists do a strand test on hair that’s bleached or fragile. It’s a good sign if they suggest one.

2. Clarifying wash (10–15 minutes)

Your hair is washed with a deep-cleansing shampoo, sometimes twice. This removes product and mineral buildup (useful with Chicago’s hard water) and opens the cuticle so the treatment absorbs evenly.

3. Rough dry

Hair is dried partly or completely, depending on the system.

4. Application (30–45 minutes)

The stylist applies the nanoplasty formula in thin sections, usually starting slightly away from the scalp. Even coverage matters: patchy application means patchy results.

5. Processing (20–60 minutes)

The formula sits on your hair. Some systems use a cap or gentle heat. Time depends on the product and your hair’s strength.

6. Rinse or no rinse

Some nanoplasty systems are rinsed out partway, and others are left in through the ironing step. Either is normal; it depends on the brand.

7. Blow-dry (20–30 minutes)

A full, smooth blow-dry.

8. Flat iron (45–90 minutes)

This is the longest and most important step. The stylist irons small sections, several passes each, to seal the treatment. The salon should be well ventilated, and any vapor should be minimal. If your eyes sting or you smell a strong chemical odor, say so.

9. Finish

Depending on the system, you may be rinsed and styled again, or you leave with hair straight from the iron.

The first 72 hours

Aftercare rules differ by product. Always follow your stylist’s instructions over anything general. Typical guidance:

  • Washing: many nanoplasty systems allow washing the same day or the next. Others ask you to wait. Ask before you leave.
  • Shampoo: sulfate-free and salt-free (no sodium chloride) from the first wash on.
  • Avoid tight ponytails, clips, and tucking hair behind your ears if the stylist asks you to.
  • Skip swimming, saunas, and heavy workouts for the first few days if advised.

Red flags during the appointment

  • No consultation and no questions about your hair’s history
  • A stylist who can’t tell you which product they’re using
  • Heavy fumes, burning eyes, or a stuffy, unventilated room
  • Iron temperatures pushed high on visibly fragile or bleached hair without a strand test
  • Being rushed through the ironing step, which is where results are made
